• If your favorite store does not have a gift registry in place, ask them to create one for you. Many store, especially small local businesses, are happy to oblige—it helps their business while providing convenience for their customers.

• Ask a friend or relative to coordinate a "registry" for purchasing gifts from a local artist or artisan. One couple that I heard about received a full set of handmade dishes commissioned from their favorite potter this way. The bride's mother coordinated the guest contributions and the purchase.
